Understand NYC Regulatory Management for Local Laws

16.1. Fire Pump

A fire pump is a device that provides the required water flow and pressure for a fire protection system. There are three common types of fire pumps: electric, diesel and steam. The fire pump unit itself consists of a pump, a drive, a driver coupling connecting the two, and a base plate.

An annual test must be performed to ensure the water flow output of the pump at 150% of rated flow. The report generated, gives a detailed and historical records of performance year to year and a visual guide to predict with confidence that the pump will be ready to perform. Insurance companies in particular will often times request a copy of this report.

16.1.1. Scheduling

Fire Pump inspection must be performed annually by your licensed sprinkler company.

This tests it performed to ensure all the devices and fire pump components perform according to the manufacturers’ specifications as well as proving that the water supply is adequate. Fire pump performance tests can deteriorate over time or be affected by impairments to water supplies. Regular testing can identify these problems and ensure that the sprinkler system and fire pump operate when needed.
